Week 9- Artistic items at Ikea

I made a visit to Ikea at Tampines on Saturday and found some interesting finds there. I took some photos and I want to share about my findings.
I also realise that Ikea changes their furnitures and items every season so there isn't the pretty much same thing each time you visit.

Here are some interesting finds!

This was one of the lights that I saw that was quite unique and creative. It reminds me of durian or rather the esplanade. It also looks like its being made up of paper cut outs with a light bulb inside it. It is a good creative idea for lightings.

This light is also very uniquely designed as it is made up of LED lights being shaped into this weird shape and thus making it into a light. I really like this lighting a lot as it is really unique and it is a good décor as well to brighten up the dining table. But however, I don't think that the light capacity is really as good as those ordinary lightings. This light is more of the design itself.

Red and black - the Devil. Came across this odd furniture. It turned out to be four mini shelves being placed together. I like the way it is designed but not the colours used. This is also a creative idea as it saves space and it can also act as a décor item.

This was some lightings that was quite cool and I've never seen such lightings before. It is totally flat but it looks like some shower head from the bottom. It has many small bulbs at the bottom of the light itself and I must say, this light is one creative creation.

One rather interesting lamp that has unique shape like a pumpkin. It is such a good decorative item for a dining table to have. Having a comfy house also means that there is a good choice of furnitures being chosen.

Interestingly shaped chairs I saw at the chairs section. It is a rattan chair that is quite vintage as people use that in the past. With some touch done to it, the chair becomes a whole new designed and modern chair.

More lights made up of rattan. It is really very unique and well-designed. I'm sure this type of light will give a different feel when being placed in the living room.

This was the section where I found all the interestingly designed rattan chairs and lights. It was a limited collection.

This chair is so uniquely designed. the shape especially. It reminds me of the shape of a broom. I wonder how much weight can this chair withstand. It is a interesting find! This can definitely be one of the outstanding and unique home deco item in one's home.

Another quite uniquely done chair. Ikea has so many unique and interestingly designed items!

This was taken at the entrance area of Ikea. This can be an art piece or artefact as well. I like how they are arranged, making it seem like a decorative item.

Moving on, there are some more interesting finds that I found in Ikea as well.
This few lights are well-designed. I rarely spot any hexagonal shaped lightings around so far. This was one of the few best finds too as it is really unique and interesting even if we just look at it. I like the way it is designed and the colours they use to match it together looks fine too. This can be an art piece instead of just a normal lighting.

This bedside table is also quite old-school kind. It is made of metal. It looks equally fine even as a simple bedside table or even as a decorative item. The shape that it is designed makes it look stackable and convenient to carry around.

Next, I found this clock that seems quite cute and well-designed. it is really unique as it can be used a ordinary clock to keep track of the time, or as a decorative piece, or even as a cabinet to store your items. The photo was badly taken by me hence the shelves at the bottom of the clock cannot be seen. This is really a good item that one should purchase.

Having said that, I feel that whenever we go to a furniture store or what not, we are bound to find some interesting finds and exploring the different type of creativity level that people can have. Just like these furnitures. they are all so well designed and not only they are nice to look at, they are even versatile and very useful as well. It really satisfy both the designer and the customer. When one is creative and knows how to think creatively, i'm sure that many can be like these designers here who designed all these furnitures who are successful in future. Creativity does not stop here. It carries on for a really long time.

Week 8- Exercise 1 - Analogical thinking

What is analogical thinking all about?

Analogical reasoning is any type of thinking that relies upon an analogy. An analogical argument is an explicit representation of a form of analogical reasoning that cites accepted similarities between two systems to support the conclusion that some further similarity exists.

We need to do some brainstorming and put on our thinking caps whenever we want to do something. In art, we need to think logically and analogically. Many experts and artist uses analogical thinking in their works. I found some items that makes use of this form, analogical thinking.

Here are the photos of the items I took a shot of.

this is a calendar made up of Lego blocks. It is a really versatile and handy item because it can be either used as a decorative item or as a calendar itself. This toy calendar is good because the dates can be easily changed and adjust accordingly when needed. It saves paper instead too as the normal calendar is made of paper and the paper calendar needs to be changed every year while this type of calendar can be used for a really long time as it is so convenient.

The picture of the Lego calendar after being dismantled. it is really a analogical object that is created. I think the person that thought of this as an idea is a pure genius as it is really very good and useful.

The next item that I have is this rubber toe nail divider for pedicure. this is used by many people especially girls when they do pedicure so that the painted toe nails will not be affected or destroyed when doing pedicure. This tool separated the toes differently and easily. This is a really useful item to have in every home.

The other time I have is this portable charger. This is one thing that many of us can't live without. This is like a practically one indispensable item that is a must-have. Being a charger itself, this portable charger allows you to charge two phones at a time which is quite time saving and the battery of this portable charger does not run out very fast. It can be used for several days straight. This is a really good invention because we can easily charge our phones any time no matter what.

Week 8 - Exercise 2 (Natural objects that has influenced form of luxurious target )

Some products is a modest source and it has influenced the form of a luxurious target. Objects that are made from natural products like natural object like tree which gives us wood or feathers given from birds or peacocks. These are natural source of object for us to be able to have many items today.

Here are some examples that I have found.

Wood allows us to have many man made objects. Like this table. Which can be used in living rooms or as a eating table. Wood is a resilient and strong material and it is often used in many furniture.

This is a small cupboard that is part of my home's TV console. It is made up of wood as well and it is given a polish of lacquer to look bright and smooth looking. Most of the furniture we have in our homes are made up from wood.

This is a dining chair that is made up of wood for the whole chair except the seat itself. This chair is good because it can last for many years without being spoiled. This goes to show what natural object like wood can do.

This is my dining table and it is made up of wood again. It is hardy and very resilient. whatever weight we put on wooden tables, they will not collapse so easily. Wood is a really reliable source of material that we can rely on.

This is the original metal element that is being used in many objects.

                     .
A HDB flat gate that is made of metal as well. Most gates that people uses are made of metal. it is sturdy and good. especially for locks.

I went to the zoo last year and fortunately managed to snap this picture of a random peacock that walked past us. Peacock feathers are being used to make earrings.

A pair of peacock earrings that my grandmother has. This goes to show how much natural objects can do.

Week 7- Human expressions with objects.

It's amazing how things or rather objects like building or houses have human characteristics like human expressions. Here are some interesting finds that I've got from the area around NAFA and along Bras Besar stretch as well as near my neighbourhood.

A curious face expression. the grey building with three main windows at the top.
this was taken along bras besar road near Q8 @ SAM.

this was taken at a void deck. it represents a pair of straight eyes and a mouth that is like shock expression.

this is a happy expression. it is taken upside down and it looks like its giving a smiley and happy face with the two windows at the bottom as eyes and the roof as a smile.

this is a fierce expression. with the bottom two as eyes and the white big space as mouth that's opened wide.

This is another smiley face that is taken beside NAFA and it is taken upside down. This is like a cute smiley face due to the nose shape. the roof represents the smile.

this is like a fierce expression. the two windows at the top is the eyes while the round gate is the mouth that is like grining and gritting the teeth.

this was taken at a hair saloon. it represents the frustrated expression. it is actually a image of a steamer for hair-dos used in saloons. When I saw this face, I immediately took a snap of this.

This is a one eyed face. the square is the eyes while the middle lock is the nose and the           bottom line is the lip. it also looks like it is winking or showing a cute face.

This is a curious expression, made up of gates. The two square-ish shapes are the eyes and the middle flower like shape is the nose, its like half the face, only features.
This is taken from a microwave at home. It is a grumpy and sleepy expression. The eyes are half closed and droopy and the lips is like duck lips.

Week 7-(Tutorial week) - Visit to 8Q museum and Peranakan Museum.

During the one week tutorial break, I visited the 8Q museum at SAM as well as the Peranakan museum. My main aim was to take some interesting photographs for my e-journal as well as to explore the place on my own to see if I can find any interesting finds.

Here are some photos taken at the 8Q museum @ SAM. It is a part of the SAM too, just that it is located further down the road. It gives off a vintage feel as well.

The entrance sticker for all visitors at SAM. took a snapshot of this with the background.

I then asked for directions to head to 8Q @ SAM. it was just a short walk away as its just opposite SAM itself. Let the adventure begin!

More directions around SAM to guide visitors to the way to SAM at 8Q. I followed the signs and walked to the museum.

this was one of the exhibit I went to at 8Q. it is a huge photograph made up of many many polaroid films. I forgot about the actual number but I definitely know that it is quite interesting.

moving on, this was one of the exhibits. its like a small room that has many stands for music scores.

This is some information about the exhibit being placed on the wall of the exhibit's room. I walked around and look at some of the exhibits at the 8Q museum but there was nothing much hence not many photos as the place is quite boring also.

Moving on, I walked down to the Peranakan Museum that is located in between city hall and Dhoby Ghaut area.

I got a entrance sticker from the lady at the counter. Entrance is free by the way.

This was taken at the entrance of the museum before I went in. I guess the sculpture represents the little girl pleading and getting her way to go to the museum. This statue being placed here makes people attracted to it, and want to have a look inside this museum.

First, I started off with the introduction to traditional Peranakans segment. When I saw all these being placed under the glass table I immediately took my phone out and snapped it. The displays shows the items that nonyas use in the past.

These are some of the jewelleries that the perankans used to wear last time. It looks so different from what we are wearing nowdays. Those that they used to wear last time, looks so vintage and classy.

These are some of the beautiful cutlery set that they use as well. I like the colours that they used on the cups and on the teapot. it is really traditional and pleasing to the eyes. I don't think we can find this kind of cutlery sets easily in Singapore nowadays since most of us are not that traditional anymore, right?

I was walking around the exhibits and I saw this post card like thing, and it turned out to be some visitors feedback form. So, I just took a photo of it for fun sake.

Next, I went to the cultural side. I spotted the late Mr Lee Kwan Yew's potraits inside as well but did not take any shots of it. The guy in the portrait on the right seems like Mr Goh Keng Swee. As for the other side, I think the people in the potraits are pioneers and important people in Singapore.

This is also a painting of somebody who has a part to play in Singapore's growth and development.

I then went on to the wedding section side, and spotted many beautifully decorated and designed traditional costumes being put on display. The intricate design on the collar and sleeves makes the whole costume stand out. I also realise that the Peranakans love to use light colours in the olden days.

More traditional costumes when I turned my back around after taking the photo above.

This was taken at the dining section. The peranakans are quite particular about the cutlery they use I guess as almost all of their cutleries are so well designed and really too beautiful to use. I took more shots of the cutleries that I found along the way. I felt like I just sank into some peranakan home.

More beautiful brightly coloured bowls and pots. aren't they really pleasing to look at?

this was used in some traditional altar ceremony. I dare not take any other shots after this as the next one was about death (the funeral procession) . I did not even stepped in to the funeral procession exhibit as it was creepy just by peeping into it from outside.

Some description about the Sam Kai Altar that visitors can read or take a look at.

Ending off with this sweet-coloured piece of fabric that is also being used in weddings. I forgot what was this actually for but I did remember that it was meant to be used during weddings.

I made this museum trip on my own and I felt a great sense of achievement as I managed to conquer 3 museum visits individually and I got to explore the different museums and what they had to offer to us. It was truly a great experience going to museums after museums and exploring the different type of museums that Singapore has. And yes, I did mention that I went to 3 different museums. I also went to one opposite SMU, The National Museum of Singapore. However, it was disappointing because I made my way there and I left after awhile because most of the exhibits were covered up, undergoing a revamp. I was disappointed as that museum has alot to look at too. I'll definitely have a museum date with my friends in future.
